In a special meeting this afternoon, the Board of Directors of the College of Geophysics and Astronomy of the National University of La Plata (UNLP) approved the creation of a new major: Meteorology and Atmospheric Science.
Present at the meeting were Fernando Tauber, the president of UNLP; Raúl Perdomo, the institutional vice president; Mercedes Medina, the secretary of Academic Business; and Adrián Brunini, the dean of the Observatory, among other functionaries.
Meteorology will be a 5-year degree with an intermediate degree, that will provide our nation’s productive sector with highly educated workers, while at the same time conducting scientific research.
The major is expected to be offered in 2013, once the accreditation process has completed. For this to happen, the Governing Board of UNLP needs to approve the measure, where it will be heard by the committees of Teaching, Interpretation and Rules and Economy and Finance. Once the Governing Board issues their ruling, the National Education Ministry needs to approve the national validity of the degree.
The major will bring a new academic offering to the traditional Astronomy and Geophysics programs already taught at the UNLP Observatory.
